-40 and a Firefight
This feels like there should be a Willem Dafoe meme.
I went out to a training area in remote interior Alaska to document an Army exercise.
This is noteworthy for several reasons;
- I got to work with Bradford Jackson, a local actor/independent filmmaker who also serves in the National Guard. Phenomenal talent.
- I performed a significant amount of stress-testing of photography gear in extreme conditions. Want to know how a 5D MK IV performs at -40? I've got plenty of data for you.
- I created a content strategy, social media strategy, and marketing strategy for the exercise.
- In addition to shooting most of the content in the exercise, I also ran the SM platforms, analyzed performance, iterated out approach, all in realtime.
- I slept in Arctic 10-man tents and slogged around in waist-high snow.
- I stayed out in -40, filmed a firefight in the middle of the night with a night vision camera, drove back to base to produce the video, and saw the Northern Lights on the road.
All in all, a pretty solid piece.
